xAI's Grok Chatbot Gets Standalone iOS App, Expanding Reach Beyond X

Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, is testing a standalone iOS app for its chatbot, Grok, reports TechCrunch. This move expands Grok's availability beyond its initial integration with the X social media platform.

The app, currently in beta testing in Australia and select other markets, leverages real-time data from the web and X to power its generative AI capabilities. These include text rewriting, paragraph summarization, question answering, and the generation of images from text prompts.

"Grok is an AI-powered assistant designed to be maximally truthful, useful, and curious. Get answers to any question, generate striking images, and upload pictures to gain a deeper understanding of your world," the app's listing reads.

xAI is also developing a dedicated website, Grok.com, to broaden web access to the chatbot. While the site currently displays a "coming soon" message for users logged in with an xAI account, its launch is expected soon.

Grok's rollout strategy has involved a phased expansion of access. Initially available only to paying subscribers of X, the company began testing a free version of the chatbot in November. Earlier this month, Grok was fully integrated into X, making it accessible to all users.

xAI highlights Grok's image generation model, touting its ability to produce "photorealistic rendering." The company further notes that the model operates with minimal restrictions on image generation, allowing users to create images using pictures of public figures and copyrighted material.
