Walmart China has announced a new strategic partnership with Meituan, China's largest food delivery company, to accelerate its e-commerce business in the country, reports Reuters.
The partnership will integrate Walmart stores into Meituan's extensive delivery network, according to a WeChat post by Walmart China. This move will significantly enhance Walmart's e-commerce capabilities in China, where online sales already constitute nearly half of its total revenue.
Walmart's China operations include a network of physical stores as well as 50 Sam's Club locations, which have witnessed growing popularity among Chinese consumers seeking membership-based shopping experiences.
This new alliance with Meituan comes after Walmart's August decision to divest its $3.7 billion stake in Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com, signaling a shift towards building its independent presence in the Chinese market.
Walmart's new focus on its own Chinese operations will now be bolstered by Meituan's nationwide delivery infrastructure and customer base. The partnership is expected to drive significant growth in Walmart's online sales in China, further strengthening its position in the competitive Chinese retail landscape.
