Telegram Hits Profitability, Durov Announces

Messaging app Telegram has achieved profitability, its founder Pavel Durov announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday. The company's total revenue surpassed $1 billion in 2024, driven by the success of its premium subscription service launched in 2022, according to TechCrunch.

Durov revealed that Telegram's premium subscription service now boasts 12 million paid users. The company is also ending the year with over $500 million in cash reserves, not including its cryptocurrency holdings.

Durov also highlighted Telegram's progress in reducing its debt.

“Over the past four years, Telegram has issued about $2 billion in debt. We repaid a meaningful share of it this Fall, taking advantage of favorable prices for the Telegram bonds. But there’s a lot of work ahead,” Durov stated in his post.

Earlier this year, in an interview with the Financial Times, Durov predicted profitability for 2025 and expressed interest in pursuing an initial public offering (IPO).

Telegram, which boasts over 950 million monthly active users, has steadily expanded its features to include business tools, ad revenue sharing, monetization opportunities for creators through paid content on channels, and a mini app store.
