SkySQL Inc., a cloud-based relational database service startup, has raised $6.6 million in seed funding, the company announced today. The funding round was led by Eniac Ventures, Good Capital, and WTI, reports SiliconANGLE.
SkySQL, which spun out of MariaDB plc last year, offers a faster, more scalable version of MySQL, a widely used open-source database. Its cloud service provides both MariaDB and MySQL environments hosted in the cloud.
The company's service is offered in two editions: Provisioned Mode and Serverless Mode. Provisioned Mode allows users to configure the infrastructure allocated to their databases, while Serverless Mode automatically scales hardware based on workload requirements. This eliminates the need for overprovisioning, ensuring optimal resource utilization.
SkySQL's database service is designed for high availability and scalability, with the ability to replicate database environments across multiple cloud providers' data centers and distribute replicas across multiple clouds. A failover mechanism, powered by a proxy that also acts as a load balancer, enables quick failover to other nodes in under a second in case of server issues.
The proxy further enhances the service by distributing user requests evenly among servers, preventing overload on individual machines. It also ensures data integrity by retrying failed data changes.
To simplify database management, SkySQL incorporates two AI features: Semantic Agents and SkyCopilot.
Semantic Agents enable users to create AI agents that interact with database information. For example, an agent could analyze sales logs to identify the most popular product. These agents can be created using natural language instructions.
SkyCopilot, built on the same technology as Semantic Agents, provides guidance for troubleshooting database issues, optimizing settings, and improving query efficiency to reduce infrastructure costs.
"As businesses increasingly rely on AI, it's essential to trust the answers derived from critical data," said SkySQL CEO Nithin Rao. "Our goal is to ensure companies have confidence in the insights driving their most important decisions."
SkySQL reports that its platform has already been adopted by over 40 customers.
