Meta Platforms is reportedly in advanced talks to build a new data center campus for its artificial intelligence projects, with potential costs exceeding $200 billion, Reuters reports, citing The Information.
Discussions are underway to construct the campus in states including Louisiana, Wyoming, and Texas. The Information reported that senior leaders from Meta had visited potential sites earlier this month.
"Meta executives have informed data center developers that the company is considering building the campus in states including Louisiana, Wyoming or Texas, with senior leaders having visited potential sites this month," The Information reported.
The surge in investment in AI follows the launch of Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT in 2022, as companies across various sectors seek to integrate artificial intelligence into their products and services.
However, a Meta spokesperson denied the report, stating that the company's data center plans and capital expenditures have already been disclosed and that anything beyond that is "pure speculation".
Last month, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company plans to spend up to $65 billion this year to expand its AI infrastructure. This investment aligns with the significant spending by other tech giants such as Microsoft and Amazon, which have announced plans to invest billions in data center development and AI.
Microsoft is reportedly planning to invest about $80 billion in fiscal 2025 to develop data centers, while Amazon has indicated that its 2025 spending will be higher than the $75 billion estimated for 2024.
