FTC Launches Inquiry into Tech Censorship Practices

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched an inquiry into the censorship practices of technology companies, The Wall Street Journal reports. This move aims to shed light on how these companies determine which content to block from user viewership and the potential consequences for consumers and competition.

"Censorship by technology platforms is not just un-American, it is potentially illegal," the FTC stated. The FTC's inquiry will examine the often-unpredictable methods used by tech companies to determine what content is blocked and the potential harm this could cause to consumers and competition.

The FTC has issued a call for information from consumers who have experienced content restrictions on tech platforms. This includes individuals who have been banned from platforms. The public comment period will remain open until May 21.

FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson has previously expressed his intention to increase scrutiny of Big Tech, particularly regarding the suppression of free speech.
