A two-year-old start-up founded by a former Huawei Technologies recruit has begun mass production of its humanoid robots, marking a significant milestone in China's rapidly developing AI robotics sector, as reported by the South China Morning Post.
Shanghai-based Agibot, founded by Peng Zhihui, has commenced commercial production of its general-purpose robot, manufacturing 962 units as of December 15, the company revealed in a recent video.
Peng, a recognized AI talent, was recruited by Huawei in 2020 under its "Genius Youth" program to work on AI projects within the company's computing division. His innovative work, including an Iron Man-inspired robotic arm, gained significant online traction on Chinese social media.
Peng left Huawei in December 2022 to establish Agibot, which has since developed several models of humanoid robots designed for both household and industrial applications. The company is backed by prominent investors such as HongShan (formerly Sequoia China), Hillhouse Investment, and electric vehicle giant BYD.
Agibot's achievement in mass-producing humanoid robots intensifies competition within China's burgeoning robotics industry. The sector has witnessed substantial government support aimed at promoting technological advancements in AI-powered robotics.
Peng's post on Chinese social media platform Weibo highlights the company's success in bringing its innovative concept to mass production within a relatively short timeframe. This accomplishment signifies Agibot's emergence as a major player in China's rapidly evolving robotics landscape.
