Baidu CEO Still Sees Need for Massive AI Investment Despite DeepSeek's Efficiency Gains

Despite the emergence of a Chinese AI startup that challenges the cost-effectiveness of large AI models, Baidu CEO Robin Li insists that massive investment in data centers and cloud infrastructure remains crucial for AI advancement. This comes as a surprise given the recent success of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup that has gained global attention for developing language models that rival OpenAI's GPT while using significantly less computing power.
Li's comments, made at the World Government Summit in Dubai, seem at odds with the implications of DeepSeek's achievement. DeepSeek's success raises questions about the necessity of massive spending on AI infrastructure, particularly considering that Baidu itself has invested heavily in its own large language model, Ernie.
"The investment in cloud infrastructure is still very much required. In order to come up with models that are smarter than everyone else, you have to use more compute," Li told attendees.
Li's comments come as a contrast to the bold claims he has made about China's AI landscape in the past. He had previously suggested that it was unlikely another OpenAI-like company would emerge from China and advocated for closed-source models as the only viable path for AI development.
However, at the summit, Li acknowledged the unpredictable nature of innovation, stating, "You just don't know when and where innovations come from," in light of DeepSeek's unexpected success.
Li also acknowledged the impact of US chip sanctions on Chinese companies, forcing them to innovate within computing constraints. He appeared to soften his previous stance on closed-source development, suggesting that open-source approaches could accelerate AI adoption.
"If you open things up, a lot of people will be curious enough to try it. This will help spread the technology much faster," Li said.
Despite these shifts in perspective, Li's emphasis on the continued need for significant investment in AI infrastructure suggests a substantial commitment to resource-intensive approaches to AI development within Baidu.
